Sustainable Development Goals (SDG)

On 26 March 2025, an event on participatory democracy in the European Union took place, bringing together students to explore the functioning and impact of the European Citizens' Initiative (ECI). Organised in partnership with the European Citizen Action Service (ECAS), the initiative aimed to raise awareness of this European tool and encourage reflection on civic engagement within the EU space.
After the opening remarks by Susana Rogeiro Nina, director of the European Studies and International Relations undergraduate programme, participants delved into the workings of the ECI, analysing its structure, the challenges of collecting signatures, and strategies for pan-European campaigning. The discussion also included a critical analysis of the ECI's impact, highlighting both its successes and areas for improvement.
The session featured an interactive Q&A moment, encouraging participant engagement and providing a space for clarification and idea sharing.
The closing remarks reinforced the importance of active and informed citizenship in strengthening democracy within the European Union.
