The Convergence of Theory and Practice in Architecture and Urbanism

Event addresses innovative solutions to social challenges in architecture and urbanism

From June 10 to 14, 2024, the Lusófona University – Porto University Centre hosted the "Research for Action" event, organized by Lígia Nunes, which brought together students, professors, and partner entities to discuss how academic results can objectively address contemporary social challenges and translate into research material. The diverse program included workshops, debates, and presentations focused on architecture and urbanism, taking place in the Main Hall, from 10:00 am to 7:00 pm daily.

The official opening took place on Monday, June 10, at 10:00 am, followed by workshops on "Challenging Practice." The day ended with a climb on the Arrábida Bridge and a welcome dinner at 8:00 pm. During the opening session, Lígia Nunes highlighted the importance of collaboration between faculty and society to create innovative solutions for urban problems.

On June 11, the activities included research on "housing indignity" and critical perspectives on "age-friendly cities." There was also a screening of the film "Collaboration: On the Edge of a New Paradigm." The discussions highlighted the need for more inclusive housing policies adapted to the needs of the elderly population.

On Wednesday, the discussions focused on "Diagnosis and narrative for action: collective heritage in territorial action" and innovative solutions for the needs of cities and communities. António Brito Guterres and Sara Neves presented community intervention projects that emphasize the importance of citizen participation in urban revitalization.

On June 13, the focus was on community-engaged pedagogy and social challenges in practice, with an emphasis on collaborative territories and sustainable development. Nadia Charalambous discussed the importance of participatory action research in education, while Alexandra Paio presented case studies on sustainable development in urban contexts.

The event culminated on Friday, June 14, with a final workshop, the preparation of the final report, and a closing farewell drink. "Research for Action" provided a space for the exchange of ideas and innovative practices, highlighting the importance of collaboration between faculty, local authorities, and civil society to address contemporary urban challenges and promote sustainable development. The active participation of attendees and the diversity of topics covered reinforced the relevance of the event for the advancement of urban and architectural practices.
