ULusofona Student Awarded at Tec2Med for Algae & AI Project
Evna Mascarenhas combines Chemistry, Biotech & AI to speed up the characterisation of natural compounds
Sustainable Development Goals (SDG)
The student on the Master's degree in Natural Bioactive Chemistry at Lusófona University - Lisbon University Centre, Evna Mascarenhas, received an award at the Tec2Med Summit 2026, standing out for her research, which combines the valorisation of marine resources with the application of advanced data analysis and processing technologies.
The research explores the bioactive potential of macroalgae, with a particular focus on their antioxidant activity. It uses infrared spectroscopy and Machine Learning algorithms to identify spectral patterns and develop analytical models capable of linking chemical information with the biological properties of the extracts.
This approach establishes a direct link between Natural Bioactive Chemistry and Biomedical Engineering, through the integration of spectroscopy techniques, multivariate analysis and artificial intelligence. The use of these tools makes it possible to explore new strategies for characterising natural compounds, contributing to the development of faster, more efficient and sustainable analytical methodologies.
The research thus highlights the potential of combining instrumentation, signal processing and intelligent data analysis to identify and characterise bioactive compounds, opening up prospects for future applications in the fields of healthcare, biotechnology and the development of innovative solutions.
The award received at the Tec2Med Summit 2026 reinforces Lusófona University's commitment to impactful research and dialogue between different fields of knowledge, demonstrating how technology can drive scientific discovery and environmental sustainability.
Lusófona University congratulates student Evna Mascarenhas on this important recognition, which celebrates academic excellence, an innovative spirit and the work carried out in our laboratories and research centres.
