On 7 October, Lusófona University - Porto University Centre held a welcome and induction session for new students joining the second cycle of the Master’s Degree in Physical Education Teaching in Primary and Secondary Education. The meeting marked the first in-person opportunity for first-year students to meet the academic team, opening the door to a learning journey and integration into the academic community.

The session began with a student sharing their academic journey and personal experience with the new students, offering a practical and motivating insight into the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.

The session also featured contributions from the Director of the Faculty of Sport and Physical Education (FDEF), Jorge Proença , and the Director of the Study Cycle, Mário Guimarães.

In an interview with Notícias Lusófona, lecturer Mário Guimarães highlighted the responsibility that comes with choosing this profession, emphasising that ethical commitment and exemplary conduct are fundamental pillars of teaching: “Being a teacher, and particularly a Physical Education teacher, means taking on a responsibility that requires you to demonstrate exemplary behaviour and serve as a role model for the young people and children you will work with. We ask them to commit themselves fully and change their attitude, adopting the approach of a responsible and conciliatory teacher.”

The Director also highlighted the importance of a critical and innovative attitude among future graduates: “I challenge them not simply to repeat what others have done, but to question, investigate and propose appropriate solutions. We want our future teachers to go into schools and transform reality, using knowledge to bring about progress and improve the way things are done.”

Regarding the first-year curriculum, he emphasised the multidisciplinary nature of the programme, which is structured around three main pillars: general pedagogical knowledge, the further development of specific teaching methodologies, and direct experience of real working environments in schools. Together, these elements promote a solid, well-grounded transition into the Master’s programme.

More than a formal introduction to the course, the opening session once again demonstrated Lusófona University's commitment to providing a demanding, inclusive education aligned with the needs and ongoing transformations of today's education system.
