ULusófona’s CATCHER project transforms air humidity into renewable energy

The European project CATCHER, coordinated by Lusófona University, is developing an innovative technology capable of converting atmospheric humidity into electricity, harnessing the potential of a natural resource present across the planet.

Entitled Creation of innovative “humidity to electricity” renewable energy conversion technology towards sustainable energy challenge, the project is coordinated by researcher Svitlana Lyubchyk, Associate Professor at Lusófona University, and is supported by the European Innovation Council.

The results achieved by CATCHER were recently highlighted by CORDIS – Community Research and Development Information Service, of the European Commission, through an article published in six languages. The publication highlights the potential of this technology to contribute to the development of new solutions in the field of renewable energy.

The research has enabled progress in the development and optimisation of humidity-to-electricity conversion devices, including a demonstration of more than 9,000 hours of continuous operation, without any loss of performance, under different temperature and humidity conditions.

Although still at an early stage of development, the technology could, in the future, complement existing renewable energy sources and contribute to more decentralised and sustainable energy generation solutions.

According to Svitlana Lyubchyk, this innovation could contribute to strengthening the European market for renewable and decentralised energy, in line with the European Union’s goal of achieving a fully renewable energy system by 2050.
