Hello, my name is Mariana, and today I’d like to share a little about my experience of settling into university life, in the hope of helping those who are about to begin this new chapter.

Before starting university, I unfortunately couldn’t attend the open days, which would have been very important for me, but I later arranged a guided tour where I could visit the campus, ask some questions, and get a better idea of the atmosphere. I think attending an open day is great — it’s an excellent way to demystify what to expect and to make more informed decisions about both the course and the institution.

I remember my very first day at university perfectly. I was super nervous, but also very excited. There were those butterflies in my stomach, the uncertainty about whether I’d make friends or adapt well, but at the same time, I felt I was starting a new stage full of possibilities.

The academic services were essential in that process. SIGA, for example, helped me a lot in understanding how to register for modules, organise my timetable, and handle everything I needed to plan my academic journey. Whenever I had questions, the course office was very approachable and always willing to help. Knowing I could rely on that support was a huge relief. I also took part in the welcome activities, and they really made a difference. At the time, none of my friends came along, so I didn’t get to meet my classmates straight away.

Today, some of them are close friends, but from the start I began to feel part of the community and gradually learned how everything worked, in a light and enjoyable way. Those moments were important for breaking the ice and building confidence. In the end, each small bit of support in those early days made the whole process smoother and more positive.

So, if you’re starting now, take every opportunity that comes your way. It will be worth it
