    This curricular unit consists in an initiation to the fundaments of academic investigation, focusing on the most used methods in social and business sciences, and particularly in tourism research. More specifically, the curricular unit addresses: general concepts of academic research, an introduction to the scientific method, different research approaches in social sciences, research ethics, and a detailed approach of the social sciences research process, with emphasis on the research problems typically addressed in tourism research.

  • Objectives

    Objectives

    By the end of the course unit, the students are expected to be able to:

    1. Apply basic concepts of research philosophy and critical reasoning to the realization of academic works.
    2. Differentiate between various research approaches and select the most appropriate for their project.
    3. Conduct research that generates valid results in an ethical manner.
    4. Deconstruct a research project between its different stages and acts.
    5. Formulate a clear, feasible and relevant starting question.
    6. Carry out a process of exploration that is appropriate to the research problem.
    7. Define a problematic of study and express it through questions and/or hypotheses.
    8. Select a sample, data collection technique and an analysis that are appropriate to their project.
