Conference 34th International Panorama Council Conference

The International Panorama Council, in collaboration with the Early Visual Media Lab at Lusófona University and the Art History Institute (IHA, NOVA FCSH/IN2PAST), is organising the upcoming IPC conference in Lisbon, under the theme «The World at a Glance. Panoramic and Peep Technologies».

This rephrasing of the original title of Robert Barker’s invention (1787), «Nature at a Glance» (in French, «La Nature à Coup d’Œil»), will explore the modern desire to experience the world visually through panoramic or peep technologies and to embark on virtual journeys. Panoramas and panoramic imagery shared these early immersive experiences with (itinerant) peepshows, cosmoramas, neoramas, and, in the domestic setting, with zograscopes, stereoscopic photography, graphoscopes and polyoramas.

These theatres of visuality were fundamental achievements in art, education, and science, encouraging visual curiosity and new observational skills. Whether involving a distant or close gaze, requiring lenses or a specific viewpoint from an observation platform, these technologies made the world, in all its facets, admirable and available at a glance.

In addition to challenging the visual sensorium, panoramic and peep technologies often intersected with and mobilised a synaesthetic universe. By exploring their coexistence and intermediality, new insights will be offered into the visual cultures and worldviews they fostered.
