Conference Power to the Fake? The Media and the Rise of Populism in Portugal
Empirical evidence and theoretical contributions on the role of the media in legitimising and expanding populism
Sustainable Development Goals (SDG)
The growth in media visibility of populism in Portugal and its influence in the public sphere, both on television and on digital platforms, calls for in-depth, multidisciplinary academic reflection.
Recent data show not only an exponential increase in the media presence of populist leaders, but also the strategic appropriation of news content and the dissemination of disinformation in electoral contexts, phenomena that contribute to the normalisation of extremist discourse.
In this context, this conference aims to bring together researchers from different fields to discuss, based on empirical evidence and theoretical contributions, the role of the media in the legitimisation and expansion of populism.
