On 8 January, the Professor José Araújo Auditorium welcomed Maria Caiado, a veterinarian whose professional journey has been marked by her dedication to wildlife veterinary medicine. The specialist, who graduated from Lusófona University in 2022, shared her unique experience in the care and conservation of wild species, highlighting the work she has been developing in South Africa, where she has been part of the Rooiberg Veterinary Services team since 2024.
During the session, Dr Caiado captivated the audience with accounts of her daily work, which includes everything from providing medical assistance to wild animals to reintroducing species into their natural habitats. With passion and detail, she described the challenges of handling emergencies, managing the nutrition and reproduction of animals, and assessing habitats to ensure the survival of endangered species.
For Maria Caiado, wildlife veterinary medicine has always been more than a profession – it is a vocation. "Working with wild animals requires not only technical knowledge but also a deep respect for nature and an unwavering commitment to conservation," she stated. The veterinarian also emphasised the importance of inspiring new generations to explore this field, which, although challenging, offers unique opportunities to make a difference in the world.
Returning to Lusófona University, where she completed her academic training, was a special moment for Dr Caiado. "It is rewarding to be able to share my experience with future professionals and show that veterinary medicine goes far beyond domestic animals. There is an entire world of possibilities in this field, especially when it comes to conservation and species rehabilitation."
The session was marked by an attentive and engaged audience, who interacted with Dr Caiado about the practical and ethical challenges of the profession. The veterinarian not only shared technical knowledge but also conveyed a message of hope and responsibility, encouraging students to pursue careers that contribute to the preservation of biodiversity.
With a career already filled with achievements and a promising future ahead, Maria Caiado is an example of dedication, passion, and commitment to wildlife. Her work in South Africa and her ability to inspire other professionals demonstrate that, beyond caring for animals, she is contributing to a legacy of conservation and respect for the planet.
