Knowledge, abilities and skills to be acquired

Over 36 months, applicants shall acquire skills in three areas of intervention, established in accordance to the "European Charter for Researchers and the Code of Good Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers." Out of the three areas of intervention, two are mandatory (knowledge area and research area), while the third is an optional training area.Such areas are: -Knowledge area: it has the goal to support knowledge acquisition in specific scientific and technological fields, being offered via the curricular units, and seminars. Topics covered are grouped in accordance to the two main programme¿s themes (New Media and Pervasive Systems). -Research area: it has the goal to assist student in the development of accomplishment of a plan of research studies appropriate to reach with excellence the doctor degree. Such study plan will be developed within an international research context, based on the R&D Unit COPELABS (Cognitive and People-Centric Computing). -Training area: it aims at providing students with the possibility to overcome specific challenges in implementing their research plans. This training nature is optional and its validity is analyzed by the student's advisor. In case of approval, it shall be included in the student's research plan and it can be implemented, for example, in collaboration with an industrial partner under a national or an international research project.

    Career Opportunities

Internet services and in particular media services applied to the Internet as a pervasive system is still in a growing wave of employability and is also an adequate entrepreneurism environment. As such it facilitates the development of micro-economy in particular for multidisciplinary projects. The growing number of services in the social media area and also the growing intrusion of technology/Internet in the day-to-day living of society are indicators that allow us to advance that from a medium-range perspective there will be no tendency to invert the current growth tendency.
  • Future Studies

    Future Studies

Due to the innovative nature of the proposed doctoral course and due to its similarities with European programmes of reference in the area of media digital and pervasive systems, there are several attractive factors that are expected to give rise to opportunities during the PhD programme implementation, namely: i) growing demand for the proposed doctoral programme; ii) take advantage of the technologies analysed/envisioned by students; iii) develop new R&D opportunities tailored for market niches; iv) increase the number of institutional cooperations iv) expand the international network of cooperations through partnerships with other teaching institutes (national or international) that are well-aligned with NOMEPS¿s goals, interests, as well as methodology.
  • Infrastructure and Equipment

    Infrastructure and Equipment

NEMPS is held at the campus of Universidade Lusófona. The facilities that the programme has are: -2 auditoriums and a lecture hall.¿ Average-sized classrooms (up to 40 persons). -Space dedicated to individual work located in the R&D Unit COPELABS. The unit has an open-space area for PhD students with a module composed of chair, desk, drawers and access to the Internet via wireless and cabling. -Equipment dedicated to R&D activities, including testing facilities. -Social area shared within the R&D unit. -Space in the general Library with over 4,000 monographs, specialized journals and online access to scientific journals, namely sage, Intelect and IEEE related to this training area. Students from NEMPS enjoy online access to relevant scientific repositories (ISI Web of Science; IEEExplore; ACM Digital Library) and also the packages of scientific journals provided by the library Vitor de Sá. In addition to the labs and study rooms mentioned, students will have access to software and also access to simulators (Matlab, Omnet++, ns2, ONE). ULHT also includes regular facilities as university residence, free wireless coverage in the campus, online secretarial services.
  • Research

    Research

The research component of NEMPS is based on the ULHT Research Unit COPELABS ¿Cognitive and People-Centric Computing (http://copelabs.ulusofona.pt). COPELABS offers applicants the opportunity to develop their scientific knowledge and also their research abilities in the context of an internationally recognized team, with activities that are based on the lines of research of the doctoral programme. COPELABS, established in October 2013, is the result of a merge of the SITILabs and CEPCA, a research unit in psychology. SITILABS was established in September 2010 in Universidade Lusófona, and is recognized by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT). It integrates a team of 27 researchers dedicated to the study of informatics and technology systems such as new media and pervasive systems. It integrates seven PhD students from various doctoral programmes (host institution: Universidade Lusófona). It is composed of an international team and attracts researchers from several countries, including Germany, France, Brazil, Pakistan, Zambia.

    Observations

From a social perspective, the global Internet presence, both as immersive media and social tool, is changing the way the day-to-day of an information society is managed, providing not only a solid basis for social interaction, but also assisting in disseminating local interests, thus developing a truly global village. There is therefore today a predominant role of the individual as part of the Internet services value-chain, in the sense that more and more the Internet provides services that are also molded by the user towards the user or towards communities of users ¿ a truly user-centric perspective. The aforementioned aspects impact both potential new services as well as new business opportunities. They also impact the evolution of the information society, and there are two main principles related to such impact that are worth to be analysed and deeply studied: i) the evolution of Internet services and architectures; ii) the immersion of the user while fundamental component of Internet services and technologies. These two aspects are today often analyzed and studied in isolation, methodology which leads to a serious failure in the development and training of individuals capable of providing a global, innovative and entrepeneuring vision not only of a future Internet but above all of a future knowledge society. It is within the described context that this doctoral programme is proposed. It has as main motivation to form individuals in the field of Informatics Sciences with a rigorous and yet global perspective of two main aspects that are the basis of a digital society and also the basis for the development of new opportunities within the context of a future Internet: New media and Pervasive Systems. The doctoral programme has Informatics Sciences (CNAEF 481) as the main scientific area. The programme contemplates one curricular year (a total of 60 ECTS distributed across 2 semestres), and 2 years (120 ECTS) devoted to the thesis work and which shall culminate with the presentation of a PhD thesis. The programme contemplates a total of eleven (11) courses, five (5) of which are mandatory. The curricular year of the doctoral programme is organized as follows. The first semester contemplates two (2) mandatory curricular units (Research and Innovation Methodologies; Digital Media) and four (4) optional curricular units of which candidates must attend two. The second semester contemplates two (2) mandatory curricular units (Thesis Workplan; Complex Systems) and two (2) optional curricular units out of which candidates must attend one.
