30 Years of Sustainable Groundwater Management
The event highlighted innovation, preservation, and the impact of climate change, promoting solutions for sustainable management of water resources
Sustainable Development Goals (SDG)
On 5 and 6 December 2024, the 14th Seminar on Groundwater took place at Lusófona University - Lisbon University Centre, marking 30 years of reflection, research, and innovation promoted by the Portuguese Water Resources Association (APRH) and the Portuguese Group of the International Association of Hydrogeology (IAH-GP).
The event brought together specialists, researchers, and professionals to discuss advances and challenges in the sustainable management of groundwater. The sessions highlighted key topics, such as the impact of climate change on groundwater recharge and quality, the development of nature-based solutions, and the importance of continuous monitoring to ensure the sustainability of water resources.
Over the past three decades, APRH and IAH-GP have played a crucial role in promoting innovative and sustainable practices for groundwater management. The seminar provided a unique opportunity to revisit problems and solutions that have shaped this journey, as well as to plan future strategies to address global challenges such as agricultural intensification, urbanisation, and climate change.
Among the most notable moments were roundtables and debates on new technologies for mathematical modelling, aquifer protection, and groundwater recovery in urban and mining areas.
The 14th Seminar on Groundwater not only celebrated the achievements of the past 30 years but also reinforced the importance of collaboration between different sectors to ensure the preservation and sustainability of groundwater resources.
