Sustainability and innovation in the agri-food sector took centre stage at the “BioFood Future: Sustainability and Innovation” Conference, held on 27 May at Lusófona University – University Centre of Lisbon. The initiative was part of the Master’s Degree in Food and Molecular Biotechnology of the Faculty of Engineering and promoted knowledge sharing between academia, research and industry.
Organised by the Directorate of the Master’s Degree in Food and Molecular Biotechnology, in collaboration with the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, the conference opened with contributions from Cristina Guerra, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at Lusófona University, Elisabete Maurício, Programme Director, and Patrícia Branco, Deputy Director of the programme. The event opened the way for reflection on the challenges and opportunities of food and molecular biotechnology, with a particular focus on sustainability, resource valorisation and applied innovation.
Throughout the afternoon, presentations explored the role of biotechnology in developing more sustainable and innovative food systems. Topics under discussion included the valorisation of agri-food by-products, biodiversity, the development of new products and evolving consumer demands, highlighting the contribution of scientific research to addressing challenges within the sector.
Contributions from experts representing research institutions, higher education institutions and companies showcased a range of projects and perspectives, reinforcing the importance of collaboration between academia and industry. The programme also featured a poster exhibition and presentations of projects developed by students, before concluding with a session dedicated to the main findings and future opportunities in food and molecular biotechnology.
