On 26 September, Batalha Centro de Cinema hosted the third edition of the Big Show, an annual initiative that brings together the film school community of Porto for a moment of sharing centred on production, filmmaking, and teaching. The event, organised by the educational service Cinema ao Redor, featured the screening of 12 finalist undergraduate films, including two from Lusófona University – Porto University Centre.

The programme was structured in two parts: six films screened initially, followed by a short break, and the screening of the remaining six films in the second half of the session. After the screening, the celebration continued at High Life bar, with a convivial gathering marked by a DJ set, reinforcing the festive character of the event.

At the opening of the session, Sofia Lemos Marques, programmer of the educational service, emphasised the purpose of the gathering: “We created the Big Show so that Batalha is not merely a place where people come to watch cinema, but also a space of welcome and reception for the audiovisual and film sector, and for you as future professionals and artists.”

The films were selected by a committee composed of professionals from the fields of cinema and the arts, who closely followed the session. Regarding one of the productions by the finalists of the Bachelor’s Degree in Audiovisual and Multimedia Communication at Lusófona University – Porto University Centre, filmmaker Falcão Nhaga highlighted: “It is a documentary with an informative character, yet it never becomes didactic, as it remains faithful to the collective memory of the space, which itself becomes a character.”

In addition to the screenings, the Big Show fostered interaction between students, lecturers, and jury members, underlining the importance of exchanging experiences throughout academic and professional pathways.

The Big Show thus reinforced the role of Lusófona University in providing excellent training for future film professionals, standing out for the quality of its productions.
