Lusófona University – Porto University Centre hosted a series of debates on 23 and 24 April 2025, focused on the context of the upcoming legislative elections scheduled for 18 May. The initiative, organised by the Faculty of Law and Political Science (FDCP), aimed to encourage critical thinking and civic engagement by bringing together representatives of the political parties currently holding seats in Parliament for the Porto constituency.
The first debate, held on 23 April, was dedicated in particular to young party candidates and their visions for the future of Portuguese youth. Entitled “Transforming the Future of Young People”, the discussion focused on key issues such as housing, taxation, and both emigration and immigration — from the departure of highly qualified young people to internal security policies related to immigrant integration. These issues were debated in a dynamic and participatory environment, revealing the main concerns and proposals of the emerging political generations.
The 24 April debate maintained a focus on major political issues but adopted a different approach. With the lead candidates from each party in attendance, the discussion moved away from topics centred on higher education and youth, making way for a more ideological and structural analysis of party platforms. The tone was more mature and reflective, in line with the profiles of the participants and their respective parties’ stances on broader governance themes.
The event stood out for the quality of political discourse, the diversity of perspectives represented, and the strong engagement of the audience, reaffirming the university's vital role as a space for fostering democratic dialogue.
