The Major Challenges Facing Science: A Perspective from a Lecturer at ULusófona

The lecturer at the Faculty of Law and Political Science at Lusófona University, Lusófona University – Porto University Centre, Mário Nuno Neves, has just published the book "Compreender o Mundo" (Understanding the World), published under the Edições Verbi Gratia imprint of Grupo Editorial Divergência.

The publication contributes to reflection on Political Science and International Relations, seeking to bridge academic knowledge and the major political, social and international challenges of our time.

Against an international backdrop marked by profound political, economic, technological and strategic transformations, Compreender o Mundo invites readers to reflect on the role of politics in organising societies, the mechanisms through which power is exercised, and the growing interdependencies that characterise the contemporary international system.

The book starts from the recognition that politics is not confined to governments, political parties or institutions, but is also present in the decisions that shape the distribution of resources, rights, responsibilities and opportunities. In this respect, understanding political phenomena requires an approach that combines historical knowledge, conceptual rigour and critical analysis.

The topics addressed include challenges to democracy, international conflicts, inequalities, cooperation between states, the defence of international law, and the implications of scientific and technological transformations for the future of societies.
