On 18 September, Lusófona University - Porto University Centre marked the beginning of a new cycle of the PhD in Management, developed in partnership with the University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro (UTAD).
Cooperation between the two institutions strengthens scientific and academic collaboration, providing doctoral students with advanced training focused on research, innovation and the production of knowledge that has an impact on organisations and society.
The opening session included a welcome for the new doctoral students, as well as a presentation of the programme, its scientific objectives and curriculum structure. This event marked the beginning of an academic journey grounded in scientific rigour, critical thinking and applied research.
One of the highlights of the session was the Inaugural Lecture, delivered by Professor António Tavares, Ombudsman of Santa Casa da Misericórdia do Porto, on the topic of “Management Challenges and Sustainability in Social Sector Institutions”.
In his address, Professor António Tavares reflected on the challenges currently facing the management of organisations in the social sector, highlighting sustainability, institutional adaptability and the need to reconcile social missions with robust, resilient management models capable of responding to increasingly demanding contexts.
The topic of the Inaugural Lecture aligns with the objectives of the PhD in Management, which emphasises evidence-based decision-making, leadership, innovation, sustainability and organisational transformation.
The joint programme offered by Lusófona University and the University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro also aims to promote the integration of doctoral students into research projects and research units, as well as their participation in national and international scientific networks. In this way, it creates the conditions for developing research that is relevant in academic, organisational and social contexts.
