Lusófona University celebrates World Social Work Day
The event brought together students and experts to reflect on ethics, professional practice, and the contemporary challenges of Social Work

To commemorate World Social Work Day, students of the Undergraduate Degree in Social Work of Lusófona University - Porto University Centre organized the event “Social Work in Perspective: History, Ethics and Professional Practice”, on 18 March.
The initiative aimed to create a space for critical reflection on the historical, ethical, and contemporary challenges of professional practice in Social Work, bringing together different perspectives and experiences.
The event programme included an opening session with interventions by Fernanda Rodrigues, President of the Order of Social Workers, Cristiana Almeida, Director of the Undergraduate Degree in Social Work at ULusófona - Porto University Centre, and Diana Dias, Director of the Faculty of Economic, Social and Business Sciences (FCESE), who highlighted the relevance of such initiatives for the academic and professional development of students, promoting critical reflection and the sharing of experience.
This was followed by Panel 1, entitled “Ethics and Professional Practice in Social Work: Contemporary Challenges”, with speakers Berta Granja and Sandra Barbosa and moderated by lecturer Mónica Teixeira. This panel addressed the ethical dilemmas and contemporary demands faced by Social Work professionals, reflecting on how to align professional values with the needs of daily practice.
Panel 2 - “History and Professional Regulation: Journey and Affirmation of Social Work" - moderated by lecturer Eva Chaves, featured interventions by Teresa Alves and Sónia Guadalupe, President of the General Assembly of the Order of Social Workers. This panel highlighted the professional's historical path, the evolution of its regulation, and the challenges of asserting Social Work in the contemporary context.
The session also featured a performance by TAMULP - Academic Tuna of Lusófona University of Porto, ending with the testimony of students' experiences regarding Community Intervention Practices in Social Work.
The initiative highlighted the essential role of Social Work in building a more just and inclusive society, thus inspiring students to take on the challenges of professional practice with a critical and ethical sense.
