    National access competition/tender: Having completed the 12th grade; A grade higher than 95 points (range 0-200), in the following entrance exams: 09- Geography 17- Mathematics Applied to Social Sciences 18- Portuguese Entry competition/tender: Course changes; Transfers; Returns. In accordance with Decree 401/2007, of April 5. Special competition/tender for those over the age of 23: On completing 23 years of age by the 31st of December of the preceding year Those not entitled access to higher education (if they have undertaken and been approved in the entrance test for the college they want to enter, they are entitled to the referred access). Special competition/tender for higher education graduates and Diplomas in Specialized Technology: (In accordance with Decree-Law No. 393-B/99, of 2 October; In accordance with Ordinance No. 854-A/99, of 4 October; In accordance with Decree-Law No. 88/2006, of May 23).

    Knowledge, abilities and skills to be acquired

    The degree in Social Work provides the acquisition of particular skills: Theoretical - determinants of a reasoned action that allow for the professional to unveil and interpret, through the movement of construction and deconstruction of the structural and conjunctural, objective and subjective issues of the problems present in society; Techniques - emphasis on the elaboration of diagnosis, social programs and projects, and other instrumental support specific to the profession; Ethics - attitude of denying evidence and issuing value judgments, replacing it with an ethical attitude that respects the values of human rights and social justice; Communicative and relational - ability and quality of interpersonal communication and professional relationship, use of language fitting the circumstances, the efficient way to produce and transmit messages and to capture the different forms of feedback; Ability to work in a team and control risks; Desire for personal / professional accomplishment, through processes of supervision and ongoing training.

    To train and to qualify for the professional practice of social work; to undergo scientific and technical training essential to the analysis and design of social programs and projects; To train for the critical interpretation of the society and its ever-changing realities and problems, while establishing the theoretical, ethical and methodological foundations appropriate to different problems and social/ institutional contexts; To promote the sense of identity inherent in this professional class and its actions; To stimulate an investigative attitude that allows creativity for more innovative and critical forms of intervention, and qualification at new academic levels; To recognize the technical-operative domain based on knowledge and experience, developing specific skills for professional performance; To develop and / or to reinforce personal and social skills as a baseline for professional skills and competences. To value supervision and teamwork, recognizing multi and interdisciplinary value.

    Career Opportunities

    The acquired training shall provide the skills and knowledge necessary for successful entry into the work market, in different areas and sectors of activity, from Social Security, Health, Education, Justice, Labor and Employment and Environment. In public or private organizations or in the field of Social Economy, social workers work in institutions such as Misericórdias, IPSS, Social and Parish Centers, Hospitals and Health Centers, Schools of all levels, NGOs and Social Movements, Unions, Cooperatives and Mutualist Associations and Foundations both in the role of direct work with the population and their needs and in the role of technical director. The corporate world is a field yet to be conquered by Social Service professionals. The local authorities (autarchies), given the increase in their skills, have become a strong employer of these professionals. The Social Service professional may also carry out her/his activity in her/his own entrepreneurial projects, or in a liberal profession regime, through advisory and consultancy services. In the continuity of academic training, teaching is also a professional option.

    Postgraduate degrees and specializations in line with Ongoing Training. Possible areas on offer are Ethics and Fundamentals of Social Work and Supervision; Justice and Social Integration; IPPS and Local Authorities and Education; Poverty and Aging. Masters (in preparation).

    Infrastructure and Equipment

    The ULP is located in the historic area of the city of Porto, in a building classified as municipal heritage. since the academic year 2020/2021, the ULP is located in a new site built from scratch - through the action of enlargement and recovery works - allowing an environment conducive to activity welcoming and bright room . From the pedagogical point of view, the new classrooms offer a variety of technological resources to support learning and suitable for the different types of Curricular Units of Social Work. In particular the global multimedia equipment, ICT resources, spaces for study and library, constitute added value in the teaching-learning process, which all students can enjoy. Mention should be made to the improvements made in terms of facilitating access to the different floors and other services for the academic community for students and other employees with disabilities. ULP also offers a set of services on campus (Social Action, Psychology and Psychopedagogy, SASE, CAE, GAEE) for the benefit of students' well-being.

    ULP's Social Work has a set of partnerships for training continuity and reinforcement, examples of which are: General Directorate of Social Reintegration and Prison Services (internships in Penal Teams and in incarceration Establishments); Santas Casas da Misericórdia; Red Cross; CPCJ¿S; City Councils; Parish Councils; Casa Dragão do Porto; SOLMAIOR; Hospital Center Conde Ferreira; Hospital Prelada; Hospital Terra Quente; Escola do Cerco, amongst others.
