NECS highlights intersections between cinema and immersive technologies
Lusófona University hosts international event exploring the concepts of navigation, discovery and journey in contemporary audiovisual media

From 18 to 21 June, Lusófona University – Lisbon University Centre hosted the NECS Conference 2025 (Network for European Cinema and Media Studies), one of the most prestigious international conferences dedicated to the study of cinema and media.
Bringing together renowned academics, researchers and professionals from around the world, the conference was themed “Navigation, Discovery and Journey”, challenging participants to examine how these concepts permeate and transform audiovisual languages in an era of constant technological innovation.
Focusing on cinema, television, digital media and immersive technologies, the event fostered in-depth dialogue on how these fields influence and are influenced by contemporary audiences’ visual, narrative and sensory experiences.
Over four days of programming, the conference addressed topics bridging classical narratives with emerging approaches such as virtual reality, interactive storytelling and sensory media, highlighting how these practices shape new forms of perception and engagement with content.
NECS Conference 2025 positioned itself as a space for interdisciplinary reflection and collective discovery, offering new perspectives on media as tools for cultural navigation, identity construction and the interpretation of complex human journeys in the digital world.
