Surprise Tribute to Professor José de Faria Costa

The ceremony marked the jurist's 75th birthday with the launch of a two-volume work

On 28 January, the José Araújo Auditorium at Lusófona University - Lisbon University Centre was the stage for a heartfelt and unexpected tribute to Professor José de Faria Costa. The event brought together friends, colleagues, and admirers of his remarkable academic and scientific career, marking his 75th birthday with the launch of the work "José de Faria Costa - Studies on the Occasion of his 75th Birthday," composed of two volumes.

The ceremony was attended by distinguished figures from the academic and legal fields, who highlighted the honouree’s undeniable contribution to legal thought, particularly in the areas of Criminal Law and Philosophy of Law. Among those present at the head table were Manuel de Almeida Damásio, President of the Board of Directors of Lusófona University, José Bragança de Miranda, Rector of Lusófona University, who expressed the honour of leading the institution on this special occasion, Professor Fábio Roberto D’Avila, President of the Scientific Council of the Eduardo Correia Institute, and Fernando Pinto Bronze, from the Faculty of Law at Lusófona University.

José Francisco de Faria Costa is a prominent figure in both national and international legal spheres. He currently serves as Director of the Faculty of Law at Lusófona University - Lisbon University Centre. Throughout his career, he has held high-level institutional positions, having served as Portugal’s Ombudsman from July 2013 to November 2017, during which time he was also a member of the Council of State.

The tribute, organised by Lusófona University, gathered long-time friends and colleagues in a moment marked by emotion and recognition of José de Faria Costa’s invaluable contribution to Law and academia.
