Workshop on Dating Violence and Intimate Relationships at ULusófona
Interactive session warns of dating violence and promotes reflection on healthy behaviour and prevention among university students
Sustainable Development Goals (SDG)
On 17 February, the first session of the Workshop "Crime and Violence in Intimate Relationships" took place, an initiative organised by the Psychology, Innovation and Knowledge Service (SPIC), within the scope of the SOLVER ATE project, in partnership with the Portuguese Association for Victim Support (APAV).
The event was held at Lusófona University - Porto University Centre and aimed primarily to raise university students' awareness of the issue of violence in intimate relationships, with a particular focus on dating violence. The session brought together students and lecturers, providing a space for reflection on the challenges of interpersonal relationships.
APAV, recognised for its work in violence prevention and victim support, led the session through interactive activities, stimulating critical thinking about healthy and harmful behaviours in romantic relationships. Participants were challenged to analyse different scenarios and identify signs of emotional, psychological, and physical abuse, which are often normalised or overlooked. Additionally, the workshop addressed the influence of social and cultural factors in perpetuating violence, encouraging the deconstruction of myths and prejudices associated with intimate relationships.
During the event, the importance of prevention, assertive communication, and promoting relationships based on respect and equality was highlighted. Resources and contact information for victim and witness support services were also made available, reinforcing the need for access to support networks.
Continuing this initiative, a second session was held on 24 February, providing another opportunity for discussion and deeper exploration of the topic. As with the first session, the event encouraged the sharing of experiences and exchange of knowledge between students and experts, fostering an environment of open and constructive dialogue.
As part of the SOLVER ATE project by SPIC, this workshop is integrated into a broader strategy for promoting mental health in Higher Education, ensuring that students have access to spaces for dialogue, reflection, and awareness of fundamental issues for their well-being.
With initiatives like this, Lusófona University reaffirms its commitment to building a more informed and conscious academic community, promoting healthy relationships and the eradication of abusive behaviours within the university context.
