In this episode of the podcast Let’s SPIC About…, the relevance of young people’s social, civic and political participation in the future of Europe was discussed, bringing together experts from different countries to reflect on the challenges and opportunities within this context. Throughout the conversation, the importance of encouraging young people to become active citizens, capable of contributing to social change and feeling like an integral part of their communities, was highlighted.

The speakers noted that, in order to promote youth engagement, it is essential to ensure basic needs such as autonomy, a sense of belonging and skills development. A democratic society should provide spaces where young people feel valued, free to express their ideas and motivated to contribute to the common good.

During the debate, the issue of trust in institutions was addressed, particularly in countries such as Romania, where the legacy of former political regimes still remains. It was noted that distrust towards schools and public institutions can negatively affect young people’s civic engagement, making a change in attitudes and practices necessary.

Through a study, it was found that young people in Portugal are among the least active, with low levels of volunteering and participation in associations. In response to this reality, the “Dream Teens” project was created in 2014 with the aim of promoting volunteering, civic participation and youth engagement. The project was later approved by the European Union and involved young people from several countries. Today, the teams involved in these initiatives are more focused on the field of mental health.

In Spain, the importance of keeping young people within the education system was emphasised, while promoting social skills, community engagement and the strengthening of democratic values.

This collective reflection demonstrated that the active participation of young people is essential for strengthening democracy, building fairer communities and fostering a more inclusive Europe.
