1st Comparative Oncology Symposium at ULusófona

The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at Lusófona University promoted, on June 28, the "One Cancer - Comparative Oncology Symposium", a pioneering event that brought together specialists to discuss comparative oncology in the context of the One Health approach. This symposium highlighted the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration between veterinary and human medicine in the fight against cancer.

The event began with an opening session conducted by Professor Laurentina Pedroso, a lecturer at Lusófona University. The programme was rich and diverse, addressing relevant and current topics in the field of comparative oncology.

The first lecture, presented by Maria dos Anjos Pires, from UTAD - University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro, discussed the one health approach in animal cancer. This was followed by Pedro Ruivo, from UC Davis - University of California, who explored comparative pathology and its role in One Health. After a short break, Katia Pinello, from ICBAS - Institute of Biomedical Sciences Abel Salazar at the University of Porto, shared her experience through the VetOnconet project.

Other highlights of the morning included lectures on the comparative molecular and clinical aspects of feline breast cancer, presented by Fernando Ferreira, from the University of Lisbon, and Gonçalo Petrucci, from EUVG - Vasco da Gama University School, respectively. The morning concluded with a round table, allowing for an in-depth discussion among the speakers.

The keynote lecture took place in the afternoon, where Chand Kana, from the USA, presented the current state of comparative oncology. The sequence of lectures continued with Joaquim Henriques, from Lusófona University, addressing the comparative aspects of canine lymphoma, and Hugo Gregório, from Anicura CHV, discussing osteosarcoma and melanoma in dogs.

Rui Ferreira, from IPATIMUP - Institute of Molecular Pathology and Immunology of the University of Porto, presented an interesting debate on the microbiome and cancer, and Ricardo Faustino, from CVP - IPLUSO, addressed comparative radiomics in glioma. The event culminated in a round table with the specialists, with the closing session led by Professor Joaquim Henriques.

The scientific committee, chaired by Professor Doctor Laurentina Pedroso and composed of renowned lecturers and researchers, ensured the quality and relevance of the discussions, reaffirming Lusófona University's commitment to innovation and advancement in the field of comparative oncology.
