A session dedicated to Paralympic and adaptive sports, held at Lusófona University - Porto University Centre, recently marked a moment of reflection and inspiration on the impact of these disciplines in promoting inclusion and social equality. The event featured prominent figures in national sports, such as Carla Oliveira and Marta Paço, who shared experiences and reflections on the challenges and achievements in adaptive sports.

Carla Oliveira, a Paralympic Boccia athlete and European champion, emphasised the importance of breaking down prejudices associated with disability and adaptive sports: “The path is here, talking about this and creating a more inclusive society.” In addition to her sports career, which includes participation in the Rio 2016, Tokyo 2020, and Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, Carla plays an active role in awareness initiatives and in the Social Action Department of the Adapted Sports Section of FC Porto.

Surfer Marta Paço, a four-time world champion in parasurfing, reinforced the importance of sharing the reality of adaptive sports athletes: “Showing everything people don’t know—sacrifices, difficulties, joys, and motivations.” At the age of 13, Marta debuted at the World Adaptive Surfing Championship in California and has since achieved numerous victories, including the European title in 2019 and consecutive world titles between 2021 and 2024. A native of Viana do Castelo, Marta has also balanced her studies with a brilliant sports career.

Tiago Prieto, national parasurfing coach and Marta Paço's trainer, highlighted the role of coaches and the need for awareness about adaptive sports: “It is essential to promote adaptive surfing and sports in general. Raising public awareness is key for things to evolve.” Prieto also stressed the importance of coaches promoting these initiatives to contribute to the development of adaptive sports.

Inês Marques-Aleixo, who attended the event, emphasised the impact these sessions have on young people: “These initiatives are essential for students to understand the work these athletes do and to feel proud of having them as Portuguese athletes.”

This inspiring session highlighted the need to broaden the debate on adaptive sports as a tool for social inclusion, breaking barriers and promoting equal opportunities. The journeys and stories of athletes like Carla Oliveira and Marta Paço become living examples of resilience, dedication, and success, showing that sports go far beyond competition, transforming mindsets and societies.
