CresCine Launches Film Industry Data Repository
Free platform that aims to resolve the fragmentation of information about the film industry in Europe.
Sustainable Development Goals (SDG)
CresCine (Ref: 101094988 | HORIZON-CL2-2022-HERITAGE-01), a consortium of 18 institutions coordinated by Universidade Lusófona, has just announced the launch of the European Film Industry Data Repository, aimed at addressing the fragmentation of information across the film industry throughout Europe.
The Film Industry Data Repository (FIDA) is an interactive data dashboard platform focused on European cinema, offering a centralised resource to analyse the entire journey of European films — from festival premieres to streaming availability.
This initial release features a robust VOD dashboard, serving as the first step in a broader strategic rollout. From January onwards, CresCine will continue to release one new analytical dashboard per week until the end of the project, providing stakeholders with an ever-expanding set of tools to assess market performance.
And it’s completely free!
The Importance of FIDA for the Industry
FIDA was designed to support data-driven decision-making by producers, distributors, sales agents and policymakers. The repository offers four key strategic advantages:
-
Visibility | Across the Entire Value Chain Lifecycle
FIDA is the only European repository that integrates data from film information databases, festivals, theatrical distribution reports and streaming catalogues. This consolidation provides stakeholders with full visibility into how European films circulate based on country of production, genre, budget and other critical variables. -
Integration | Unprecedented Combination of Key Data Sources
To ensure accuracy and depth, FIDA synthesises data from TMDB, Wikidata, Lumiere Pro, Cinando, International Showtimes, UsherU, media-press.tv and the World Bank. This aggregation creates a unified dataset specifically focused on the nuances of European distribution. -
Insights | Critical for Smaller Market Territories
While commercial analyses often focus on major territories, FIDA provides a detailed overview of how films from smaller countries circulate. This coverage allows stakeholders in these markets to benchmark performance, identify realistic export opportunities and optimise distribution strategies where data was previously scarce. -
Immediate Access | To VOD Analytics
The launch includes a live dashboard dedicated to VOD distribution. Using aggregated FIDA data, this tool tracks when films enter VOD catalogues, their availability windows and distribution reach.
Next Steps: Weekly Releases
The current VOD dashboard is only the starting point. From January onwards, the weekly release schedule will introduce new layers of data visualisation, ensuring that industry professionals have continuous access to fresh insights into theatrical circulation and cross-border mobility.
