This option is available for master’s and doctoral programmes worth 90 ECTS credits or more.
Tuition fees are calculated according to the number of ECTS credits in which you enrol.

Film Studies Master is oriented towards the creative conception of documental and fictional cinema (writing, dramaturgy and directing) and, simultaneously, towards critical thinking and theoretical investigation of cinema (in articulation with the fields of art, culture and politics). The duration of the course is 4 semesters. It is based on a development of project methodology, allowing students to develop throughout the course: ¿ The writing of a project (script included) for a feature film or mini-series, respecting all the rules and principles that allow them to prepare a project capable of being submitted to evaluation by the programs and institutions of the European Union; ¿ The direction of a fictional and/or documentary film; ¿ An applied theoretical investigation within the scope of cinematographic studies, of a critical nature, which results in a written thesis or a paper. The course is aimed to students qualified with a Degree in Cinema and Media Arts, or other degrees in related areas, as well to all professionals who wish to deepen their skills in the areas of creative film production, directing and writing.

The following may apply for the Master's Degree: a) People who hold a B.A. or equivalent degree; b) People who hold a foreign academic degree awarded after a 1st study cycle organized according to the Bologna Process by a member state of that process; c) People who hold a foreign academic degree acknowledged as a degree satisfying the objectives of the graduate degree by the due body; d) People who have a school, scientific or professional curriculum acknowledged by the due body of CUL certifying the capacity to obtain this study cycle. Application requirements: It can be admitted students with basic training in the areas of production and audiovisual filmmaking as well as students with other basic training that can demonstrate relevant work experience. In addition to the detailed CV, all applicants must submit the following: a) Individual Portfolio that demonstrates an artistic and professional path and the relevance of past experience. This portfolio should preferably be submitted in digital format. b) Individual project containing note of intent, synopsis and other elements that the candidate considers relevant relating to an original idea for the production of a cinematographic work.

Technical and professional skills that I will acquire
This new masters degree presents a unique and original configuration in our country, being totally oriented towards an effective production and direction of cinematography projects framed in an environment of critical and theoretical reflection. Therefore, the entire degree is based on a methodology of a project in development and throughout the degree the students will be invited to: Individually develop a written project and planning a feature-film, respecting every regulation and principles that allow them to prepare a project that can be submitted for evaluation to the ICA - Institute of Cinema and Audiovisual Arts or the MEDIA program of the European Union; Direction of a short film in a film format; Direction of a documentary; Direction of a experimental/artistic nature project with resort to the potential of new digital technologies.

Ranking criteria: - 50% grade of previous qualification - 50% Interview Candidates with no degree or previous qualification classification, the interview assumes a weight of 100% Note: Majority of the classes are taught in Portuguese, with the exception of one subject that is taught in English language, so you need to be comfortable with both languages.
