Great Artists on Campus opens the DCAM school year

The “Great Artists on Campus” series of talks, promoted by the Department of Cinema and Media Arts (DCAM), opened the welcoming activities for new film students with a presentation by the British-Kenyan visual artist, filmmaker, and writer, Grace Ndiritu, winner of The Jarman Film Award in 2022 in the UK. This was the first event of the 2024/2025 programme, held on 9 September at the Fernando Lopes Cinema, located at Lusófona University - Lisbon University Centre. The artist presented two of her projects and shared with the audience the motivations behind their creation.

The project “Black Beauty” portrays the concept of African migration, climate change, and how humans have evolved over the years. “Becoming Plant” invites society to discuss broader social and relational issues, such as science, spirituality, psychiatry, and the problems of collective depression and trauma resulting from living in the era of late capitalism.

Through her art, the artist expresses different ideas about the worldview through the lenses of postmodernism and modernism, while emphasising the importance of deep reflection on the impact that changes have on humans.

It is important to note that Great Artists on Campus takes place throughout the year, with a diverse programme featuring key figures in contemporary Portuguese art.
