The work The Role of Women in Research and Innovation: (Re)Shaping the Frontiers of Science and Technology, recently edited by Diana Dias, Vice-Rector for Science and Innovation at Lusófona University, represents an important international contribution to the contemporary debate on gender, science and innovation, bringing together multidisciplinary contributions and perspectives from female researchers from different countries and scientific fields, highlighting the role of women across various domains of knowledge.

The publication explores how women have been transforming the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), despite the many existing challenges associated with gender inequalities and the exclusion mechanisms still present within research systems.

The book combines historical perspectives with contemporary analyses, highlighting women’s trajectories and transformative contributions across different domains of knowledge.

Throughout the chapters, topics such as female leadership in STEM, inclusive innovation, gender equity in higher education, artificial intelligence, education, technology, social transformation, Latina women in science, and institutional strategies for more collaborative and inclusive scientific environments are explored.

The book is published in open access, thus contributing to “a more democratic and accessible science aligned with the principles of open science and knowledge dissemination”, explains lecturer Diana Dias, who is also Director of the Faculty of Economic, Social and Business Sciences (FCESE) and of the School of Economic and Organisational Sciences (ECEO).

The work is aimed at researchers, policymakers, lecturers and professionals connected to education, science and innovation, constituting both an academic contribution and a call for the construction of more equitable, diverse and sustainable scientific ecosystems.

“The Role of Women in Research and Innovation: (Re)Shaping the Frontiers of Science and Technology” thus establishes itself as an international reference work for reflection on the future of science and technology from a more inclusive and plural perspective.
