ULusófona Celebrates Freedom in Physical Education and in Sports

The event addresses the progress of physical education and sport after the Revolution of 1974

The Lusófona University held the Physical Education and Sports Week from April 22 to 26, 2024, celebrating 50 years of freedom. The event, through a diverse program, included conferences, debates, sports tournaments, and demonstrations, celebrating the developments in this field since the Revolution.

The official opening took place in the José Araújo Auditorium, with the presence of important figures from the university, such as the Dean of Lusófona University, José Bragança de Miranda, the Chairman of the Board, Manuel de Almeida Damásio, and the Director of the Faculty of Physical Education and Sports, Prof. Jorge Proença.

One of the highlights was the conference “The Importance of Academia in the Training and Success of Football Coaches in Portugal,” which featured renowned football coaches such as Prof. Nelo Vingada, Prof. Rui Vitória, and Prof. Mónica Jorge. Moderated by Professor Paulo Cunha, the conference generated an enriching debate on academic training and the development of successful careers in football. In addition to the lectures, the event also promoted several sports competitions, such as futsal, volleyball, handball, and basketball tournaments, at the Prof. Teotónio Lima Pavilion, encouraging active student participation and sports practice.

Another highlight was the roundtable on the “Historical Context of Fitness in Portugal,” which brought together experts such as Professor Luís Cerca, Dr. André Manz, CEO of Manz, Dr. José Luís Costa, representative of AGAP, and Dr. Pedro Dores, General Director of the People chain. Moderated by Professor Diogo Teixeira, the discussion addressed the evolution of fitness in the country, from the past to future perspectives, contributing to a deeper understanding of the sector. The Maurice Piéron Sessions also provided relevant debates on physical education and school sports in Portugal and Spain, before and after the establishment of democracy, with the participation of renowned academics and specialists.

The Physical Education and Sports Week at Lusófona University concluded with an awards ceremony and a festive celebration, the "Lusófona Academic Sunset." This event emphasized the importance of academic training in the development of sports in Portugal, highlighting the fundamental role of Lusófona University in training high-level professionals. The combination of academic and sports activities not only celebrated half a century of freedom but also promoted the exchange of knowledge and experiences among students and professionals, strengthening the sports and educational community of the country.
