Professor José Artur Brito will represent the Macromolecular Crystallography community in the United Kingdom
Sustainable Development Goals (SDG)
Lusófona University - Lisbon University Centre is pleased to announce that Prof. José Artur Brito, lecturer at the School of Psychology and Life Sciences, has been appointed as User Representative of the Macromolecular Crystallography Group on the Diamond User Committee (DUC).
With this appointment, Prof. José Artur Brito will play a crucial role in representing the interests of the X-ray crystallography user community at the Diamond Light Source, a synchrotron radiation facility based in the United Kingdom. As a representative on the DUC, the professor will work closely with Diamond representatives to discuss issues affecting the user community and identify solutions to ensure a high-quality synchrotron experience.
The Macromolecular Crystallography community in Europe is an active and highly significant group, composed of thousands of researchers across several countries. This community relies heavily on advanced facilities such as the Diamond Light Source for the study and understanding of biological processes and for the development of innovative solutions in areas such as medicine and biotechnology. As a major research centre in macromolecular crystallography, the Diamond Light Source attracts a substantial number of users from around the world, highlighting the importance of this community and the role of such facilities in supporting its work.
Prof. José Artur Brito is a recognised expert in protein crystallography and structural biology, with a strong track record in determining the three-dimensional structures of biological macromolecules. His research has significantly contributed to our understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying various biological processes. As a representative on the DUC, he will use his expertise to advocate for the needs of the Macromolecular Crystallography community.
"This appointment is a significant recognition of Prof. José Artur Brito’s expertise and commitment to the scientific community, fully aligned with his work at Lusófona University", said the Magnificent Rector Professor José Bragança de Miranda. "We are very pleased to see Prof. José Brito take on this important role and look forward to his contributions to the DUC."
The involvement of Prof. José Artur Brito with the DUC, beyond being an important milestone for Lusófona University, is also a milestone for the broader scientific community, fostering collaboration and innovation in the field of macromolecular crystallography in Portugal and across Europe.
