Lifelong Learning is Key to Adult Mental Health
ULusófona research reveals that continuing education improves well-being, combats social isolation and promotes healthy ageing
Sustainable Development Goals (SDG)
A study conducted by Paulo Silvestre, a lecturer at the Lusófona University and researcher at CeiED (Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies in Education and Development), revealed that lifelong learning is essential for the mental health and quality of life of adults aged 55 and over.
The research, developed within the scope of the Doctorate in Education at Lusófona University, analysed 932 participants and showed that formal educational activities, such as Higher Education, are associated with better mental health, while non-formal programmes, such as Senior Universities, promote greater social integration.
The study also highlights that continuous learning combats social isolation, promotes autonomy, and maintains cognitive and emotional capacities, making it an essential tool for healthy ageing. Lusófona University reinforces its commitment to research that contributes to societal well-being and development.
