500 years on, after the 1755 earthquake, the house remains in the capital of Portugal
27.03.24 - 16h32Nóisi - The Oldest House in Lisbon
Located in one of Lisbon's oldest neighbourhoods, Alfama, this residence is over 500 years old.
What is truly incredible is that this small house withstood what is considered to be the worst tragedy ever to hit our territory, the earthquake of 1755, which devastated a large part of the city. It's believed that the reason Lisbon's oldest house survived the 1755 quake was because of its small size and solid pillars, as well as the enormous effort made by all its owners to keep it standing to this day.
The overhang of the first floor stands out as one of the features that identifies the medieval architecture of this small house. Although this type of house is not very common in Lisbon today, it was quite common until the beginning of the last century. In fact, this same house was surrounded by several other buildings of the same type, but which were demolished in the 1940s.
