Master’s in Media and Information Literacy and Digital Citizenship

“My name is Patrícia Ferreira. I graduated from the Master’s in Media and Information Literacy and Digital Citizenship at Lusófona University – Porto University Centre.

More recently, this master’s programme has adopted the name Media and Digital Citizenship. I currently work at the institution as a Public Relations Technician.

What motivated me to choose this master’s degree was how different it was from the other programmes available in the Porto metropolitan area. It focused strongly on the digital dimension and was not limited to journalism, marketing, or advertising.

My journey throughout the master’s was very positive, except perhaps for the thesis, which I found to be the most challenging part. However, the classes, the lecturers, and the overall experience gave me valuable knowledge, both personally and professionally.

One curricular unit that had a strong impact on me was Information Disorders, taught by Professor Vanessa Rodrigues. We explored topics such as fake news and fact-checking, which later became the focus of my master’s thesis and captured my interest throughout the course.

Throughout the programme, I developed several important skills that have been valuable both personally and professionally, especially in my career in Public Relations. One of the most important was learning how to conduct literature reviews, something I had never done before and which has proven extremely useful in research and academic work.

A lecturer who made a significant impact on me was Professor Vanessa, who also supervised my master’s thesis. She was a constant source of support throughout that process. Whenever I needed guidance, she was always available, whether by email or phone, and I truly value that support.

To students considering applying for this master’s degree, my advice is simple: go for it. It is absolutely worth it. You will learn a great deal and grow both personally and professionally.”
