Bachelor's Degree in Sound Science and Technology
My name is João Alves, I'm 34 years old, and I completed my Bachelor's degree here at ULusófona, in Sound Science and Technology.
I also completed my Master's degree in Sound Production and Technology. I initially took the postgraduate course, which was later converted into the Master's degree in Sound Production and Technology. I'm now pursuing a PhD in Media Arts and Communication, also here at ULusófona. When I first joined ULusófona, I already had my own mastering studio and had been working professionally in the field for several years.
I met a lecturer who opened many doors for me. I'll never forget that, within six months, acoustic music accounted for 50% of my client base. So, it's not just about the courses themselves, or the sound course in particular, but also about the connections between the sound course and other degree programmes, especially Cinema.
I worked on a film, and from that point onwards, I started working on more and more projects, and the phone never stopped ringing. Nowadays, I work almost exclusively in Cinema. Two things that particularly stand out to me are how much the teaching staff have improved, quite dramatically, in fact.
Today, we have a much more specialised teaching team than we did back then. The facilities have also improved enormously, not just the spaces themselves, but the equipment as well.
We have this mixing console, which is fantastic, and I only know of two or three like it in Portugal. The greatest advantage of this course, beyond the curriculum itself, is the opportunity to meet people who are genuinely passionate about what they do, not only in sound but in other fields too. In my opinion, that's one of the most positive things this university has to offer.
