4th Electrical Engineering Workshop: Challenges and Future Outlook

The 4th Electrotechnical Engineering Workshop (2EW) took place on 16 May 2025 at Lusófona University - Porto University Centre. The event featured speakers from both the university and the Portuguese business sector, fostering interdisciplinary dialogue on new challenges and opportunities in the fields of energy and digitalisation.

Organised by FCNET, the workshop addressed highly relevant topics for students, researchers, and professionals in Electrotechnical Engineering, Sustainable Energy Systems, and Computer Engineering. The main goal was to discuss current market demands and the expectations of the international community regarding the training of highly qualified professionals capable of addressing the energy transition and the digital era.

Topics covered included: energy storage systems, anomaly detection, smart grids, energy security, and high-voltage equipment monitoring. The session included contributions from experts such as Filipe Joel Soares, Alexandre Lucas, Gil Silva Sampaio (all from INESC TEC/Lusófona University), Fernando Lourenço and Jayme da Costa, António Ferreira dos Santos (GALP), and António Fernando Martins Cardoso (FEUP).

The presentations highlighted the crucial role of data, technology, and innovation in modernising energy systems, focusing on resilience, flexibility, the integration of renewable energy, and the management of energy communities. The case of Madeira Island, as an example of an isolated electrical system, was one of the key highlights in the analysis of sustainable and intelligent solutions.
