On 9 April 2025, Lusófona University welcomed Françoise Vergès as part of the Great Artists on Campus series. Françoise Vergès is internationally recognised as a leading voice in decolonial feminism and anti-racist activism.
Holding a PhD in Political Science from the University of California (Berkeley), the researcher shared insights from her academic, activist and curatorial journey, addressing themes such as the intersections between psychology, postcolonial theory and artistic production.
The session, which was free to attend, featured a talk by the artist followed by a Q&A segment. Highlights included her curatorial projects — such as the exhibition The Slave at the Louvre — and the publications A Decolonial Feminism and Une théorie féministe de la violence.
Vergès also spoke about the collective Decolonize the Arts, of which she is a co-founder, and emphasised the importance of rethinking cultural institutions from a critical and inclusive perspective.
