Joshua Decter Challenges Perceptions of Art and Curatorship at ULusófona
Third edition of Great Artists on Campus promotes debate on the role of art as a social and political phenomenon
Sustainable Development Goals (SDG)
In its 3rd edition, the Great Artists on Campus event, organised by the Department of Cinema and Media Arts (DCAM) at Lusófona University, welcomed one of the most thought-provoking figures in critical thinking about art and curatorship: Joshua Decter.
Decter is a renowned writer, curator, and art historian, author of fundamental works such as Art Is a Problem: Selected Criticism, Essays, Interviews and Curatorial Projects (1986-2012) and Exhibition as Social Intervention: Culture in Action 1993, both published in 2014. His work examines art not only as a form of creative expression but also as a socially and politically contradictory phenomenon.
During his talk, Decter challenged conventional perceptions of art and curatorship, analysing their social, cultural, and ideological impact. He encouraged the audience to reflect on the role of art as a tool for questioning and, at the same time, as an object of internal dilemmas.
The session was an invitation to deconstruct traditional thinking about curatorship, presenting it not only as an organisational practice but also as a language that demands constant reformulations, considering ideological, public, and discursive contexts. By proposing a critical approach to art as a paradoxical field, Decter stimulated essential discussions about its meaning in the past, present, and future.
