"It's very, very interesting to try a bit of everything and, in that respect, the first year at Lusófona was very good and the course itself"

Hello, my name is Rodrigo Doroteia and I'm currently finishing my degree in photography. I worked in the Lusofona film warehouse for 3 years and now I'm a director of photography and camera assistant in film. I got into photography because it was a hobby I had and I just didn't know what else to do, so when I got into it I started trying a bit of everything. I did architecture photography, fashion photography, studio photography and product photography. I tried everything and ended up liking fashion photography the most because it also had a more creative side. And from there, I started doing some projects.
I've also been developing with a friend of mine, Francisco Gala, and our first big project was "More than just flesh", which we did with a jewelry artist about body dysmorphia and that project ended up in Kaltblut, the magazine that is Germany's biggest fashion magazine. It was incredible, it's a digital magazine that has thousands of followers on Instagram and has a lot of respect in the fashion world.
After that, about two or three weeks later, we got in touch with Mob Magazine, also a European fashion magazine, which already has a physical magazine, and we managed to get our project on the cover of one of their editions, which I think was my first big step into the creative world, so to speak.
Then, through that, within Armazém, I began to have more contact with the world of cinema and movie cameras and movie people. I started filming as an assistant gaffer and things like that, I started applying the lighting things I learned in fashion to cinema and I started to have a passion, I started photographing my own and my own little videos and from then on I got the cinema bug and now I've had several projects.
One of the projects that I really like, that I really enjoyed, was an opportunity to go and film in Holland, a short film in Holland, about how difficult it is for people who have mental problems to be able to express what they feel.
And the fact that I filmed in another country with completely different people, I think it's a very funny experience. The people there were very nice and I think the movie went well. So it was a very good opportunity.
It's very interesting to try a bit of everything. And in this respect, by chance, the first year at Lusófona was very good and the course itself, depending on certain phases, I didn't really know what I liked, I thought I liked one thing, but then I didn't like it. I've also exhibited architecture photography, which has nothing to do with fashion photography.
So I think it's a bit like trying everything out. And one thing I've also realized along the way is that even work that we think is bad can be good in some way and that we don't have to be afraid to show our work to find out what others will say or that it's bad, so publishing our work for people to see, regardless of what it is, whether it's fashion, architecture or a product, I think it's very important for people to experiment, to publicize their work and to understand what they really like.
