To mark World Cinema Day, Professor Marco Ferreira from the Bachelor’s Degree in Audiovisual and Multimedia Communication at Lusófona University - Porto University Centre shared his top 5 films that every Film student should watch.
The list includes Citizen Kane (1941) by Orson Welles, for its technical innovation; Psycho (1960) by Alfred Hitchcock, which redefined suspense by demonstrating the power of editing and sound in storytelling; The Godfather (1972) by Francis Ford Coppola, a reference in mise-en-scène (visual staging) and cinematography; Taxi Driver (1976) by Martin Scorsese, a visceral portrayal of the anti-hero in conflict with both the city and himself; and In the Mood for Love (2000) by Wong Kar Wai, an example of how “cinema can express emotion from a visual, sensory and poetic perspective, without depending on narrative.”
According to the lecturer, these five films represent essential lessons on cinematic language and emotion — works that continue to inspire filmmakers and students to understand the power of image and storytelling in what is known as the seventh art.
