Workshop debates innovation and sustainability in Electrical Engineering
Specialists presented innovative solutions for energy efficiency, smart grids and renewable energy integration
Sustainable Development Goals (SDG)
On 14 May, Lusófona University - Porto University Centre hosted the 5th edition of the Electrical Engineering Workshop. The initiative, organised by the Faculty of Natural Sciences, Engineering and Technology (FCNET), was dedicated to showcasing the state of the art in Electrical Engineering, with a special focus on Energy Systems.
This edition featured six presentations on current and emerging topics in Electrical Engineering. Gil Sampaio addressed the importance of data in smart electrical grids, analysing the role of information and monitoring in the management of modern energy systems. This was followed by Vítor Cunha with “Ants, Wolves and Whales: The Zoo of Optimisation”, exploring nature-inspired algorithms for solving optimisation problems. Filipe Soares presented a study on energy optimisation in refrigerated warehouses using thermal storage with phase change materials (PCMs), exploring solutions to improve energy efficiency in industrial contexts.
Alexandre Lucas explored data envelopment analysis through a case study on performance evaluation in waste management. Salvador Carvalhosa focused on electric vehicle charging in residential buildings, discussing energy management strategies to optimise resources and respond to the growth of electric mobility. Finally, Leonel Carvalho highlighted the integration of renewable energy and curtailment phenomena in the Iberian Peninsula power system, reflecting on the challenges of renewable production and grid stability.
The “2EW – Electrical Engineering Workshop” thus provided a space for reflection and discussion on current technological and energy challenges, promoting engagement between students, researchers, lecturers and professionals in the field.
