The Degree in Portuguese Studies is designed to meet current and future challenges in the field of the Portuguese language, given the context of complexity and the potential of this language for the social, scientific and professional development of Portugal and Portuguese-speaking countries. The course provides comprehensive training in Portuguese language, cultures and literatures from a contemporary and interdisciplinary perspective. It includes training in language as a human capacity for communication, the construction of knowledge and the transmission of culture.
The first year of the course is dedicated to a general humanist education through an introduction to the sub-areas of linguistics, literature and culture. In the second year, the teaching of these basic subfields is deepened with an emphasis on the cultural and literary diversity of Portuguese-speaking countries. In the third year, students will use the knowledge they have built up previously to choose a topic in one of the sub-areas and explore it in greater depth through research. They are encouraged to choose socially relevant and topical themes to which the final dissertation can make a contribution.
